Letting intuition guide you
Aminah Simmons' first introduction to Ƶ Allison was meeting admissions counsellor, now recruitment and admissions coordinator, Curtis Michaelis (’09) at a post-secondary school fair at her high school, Cedar Ridge Academy. While she was initially drawn to the University’s intimate community, which was reminiscent of her home in Bermuda, it was the historical connection between Bermuda and Ƶ Allison that stood out to her and made it one of her first choices for the next steps in her journey.
“Ƶ Allison felt like a small piece of home,” Simmons recalls. “It was a tight-knit community and even though the weather was cold, I knew I would find my place there,” she giggles.
Upon arriving at Ƶ Allison, Simmons found herself in an environment where she was a minority, which was a new experience for her. However, this challenge became the catalyst for her own personal growth. Throughout her academic journey, she developed critical life skills, such as conflict resolution and self-advocacy, which has proven to be invaluable throughout her professional career.
“Being a minority at Ƶ Allison taught me how to navigate different situations and communicate effectively. It was an eye-opening experience that helped me build the confidence to stand up for myself,” she shares.
Initially enrolled in computer science, she soon found herself struggling. She sought guidance from International Student Advisor Christa Maston (’04) and shifted her focus to religious studies and discovering her true passion in marketing through the University’s internship program.
“Involvement in extracurricular activities was a game-changer for me,” she says.
During an internship with the Atlantic Ballet, Simmons says, “I joined the communications team, took on social media roles, and realized that marketing was where my passion lay.”
Post-graduation, Simmons' career path has been as diverse as it is inspiring. After starting her career journey in administration at a doctor’s office, she later took on a role as senior marketing coordinator at KPMG. Then she found a role that was the perfect fit.

Now as the marketing and communications coordinator for the Bermuda Football Association (BFA), Simmons networks internationally with other marketing professionals in her frequent travels with the Bermudian teams, one of her favourite aspects of her position. Her other notable rewards aspects include supporting player development and charitable initiatives in Bermuda.
“My job at the BFA is incredibly rewarding,” she says. “I get to help develop players on and off the field, while also supporting charitable causes.”
When reflecting on what advice she would share with current Ƶ Allison students, she suggests, “Internships, whether paid or unpaid, are invaluable. They give you hands-on experience and help you build connections. Also, start your portfolio early. It’s one of the best ways to showcase your skills to potential employers. But most importantly, don’t forget to have fun while gaining experience. It will shape not just your career, but your personal growth as well.”
Looking to the future, her goals are centered on giving back to the community and supporting small businesses with her company, New Heights Media.
“And through my own business, I work with small companies in Bermuda, helping them grow post-COVID.”
She also plans to expand her efforts to combat antisocial behavior by providing youth with alternative activities.
“My focus is on community work and using my skills to help small businesses thrive. I want to build my experience to better support Bermuda’s growth and development.”
